Drafting.

Drafting is all about getting your ideas down on paper. Don't spend too much time thinking about grammar or spelling or punctuation (although the better this is, the less time you'll spend editing), just get your story out of your head.

A few tips:

  1. Skip lines - this will give you space to fix spelling and writing and make it easier to insert more detail as you go.

  2. Make notes in the margins

  3. Remember that the first draft is not the last draft. You will change it later to make it better.

  4. Keep your purpose and your audience in mind.

  5. Don't forget who your main character is.

Neil Gaiman on Writing

This is a video someone put together using the audio from a Nerdist podcast where Neil Gaiman, one of my favourite authors, talks about writing. I particularly like what he has to say about writing first drafts. The video clips are from a variety of movies that feature writers as the main character.

Random House Newbery Authors

Writers talking about winning an award and about writing.

Cookie Monster gives us some useful information for showing, not telling how people are feeling. This could be useful in your writing.
