Writing.

Number of Writing and Representing Products (25-35%):

Multi-Paragraph

3

In case you're not sure, multi-paragraph means more than one paragraph. It includes both fiction and non-fiction. Your first one will be a piece for our Fears and Phobias unit, the second will be your Turning Points essay, and the third will be a piece from our Mysteries unit.

Poetry

3

You will be writing 3 poems (at least). One will be a study in word choice during our Fears and Phobias unit. One will be a metaphor poem based on the poem Mother to Son, which we will read during our Step Up unit. You'll have some choice in the third, but it will have to use several examples of figurative language.

Visual/Informational

1

This will be a cross-curricular exercise with science and art, and maybe a little technology too. We will use the principles of art and graphic design to create and informational piece about an environmental issue relevant in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Multimedia

1

You will use words, visuals, music, and movement to create a multimedia piece on a topic yet to be determined. This will overlap with some art and technology outcomes and, who knows, maybe even some science, too. But it will probably have more to do with bullying or another topic from our Step Up unit.

Creative Expression

1

You will have a lot of choice with this one. You will have to express yourself creatively. That usually means make up a story, but, like I said, you will have a lot of choice.

Demand Piece

6

You will have to write six pieces on demand. I'll give you a topic and/or a form and you will spend the class preparing a piece of writing that I will collect at the end of class.

Neil Gaiman on Writing

This is a video someone put together using the audio from a Nerdist podcast where Neil Gaiman, one of my favourite authors, talks about writing. I particularly like what he has to say about writing first drafts. The video clips are from a variety of movies that feature writers as the main character.

The Chronicles of Harris Burdick

Lemony Snicket has a theory about what happened to Harris Burdick. Watch as he interrogates several authors who may be able to shed some light on the mystery!

How a Book is Made

Dang it! Wix won't let me put the whole playlist here. There are 8 episodes altogether. This is just the trailer. But if you click on the YouTube button on the video, it should take you to the channel where you can watch the others.

Cookie Monster gives us some useful information for showing, not telling how people are feeling. This could be useful in your writing.
