WARNING: SPOILERS!!!!

 

Nobody (Bod) Owens is the main character of this novel. He's a normal boy who grows up in a graveyard. His family was killed. Everything that happens is about him, even when he's not there. We call the main character, the protagonist. He has been given the Freedom of the Graveyard, which means he goes places the living can't, the eyes of the living slip from him, he can see in the dark, and he is allowed to live in the graveyard (right of abode).

 

Silas is one of the inhabitants of the graveyard, but he's not one of the ghosts. He helps the ghost look after Nobody. Silas is most likely a vampire (he's not alive, he can leave the graveyard but has been given the right of abode, he's nocturnal, he eats only one kind of food). He's "lived" a long time.

 

Scarlett Amber Perkins is a little girl who visits the graveyard and becomes Nobody's friend. Her parents think Bod is her imaginary friend. She moved away to Scotland after her adventure in the barrow with Bod. Her dad's a particle physicist and her mom teaches english over the Internet for a university.

 

Miss Lupescu comes to the graveyard to look after Bod when Silas goes away. She brings Bod food and makes him memorize long lists of information. She made him learn how to call for help in every language. She is a Hound of God (werewolf or lycanthrope) which means she will chase evil to the Gates of Hell (Bod knows she will go even further than that). She is really smart and knows a lot.

 

Mr. and Mrs. Owens - An old married couple who never had kids of their own. They adopted Bod when his family was murdered.

 

Caius Pompeius - one of the oldest inhabitants of the graveyard.

 

Josiah Worthington, Baronet - wealthy inhabitant of the graveyard who feels he's their leader.

 

Mother Slaughter - an outspoken old lady who inhabits the graveyard

 

The Man Jack - murdered Bod's family and is looking for Bod so he can kill him too.

 

The three ghouls - Bishop of Bath and Wells, The Honourable Archibald Fitzhugh, and the Duke of Westminster - use the ghoul gate in Bod's graveyard and convince Bod to go with them. Bod flees when he finds out the ghouls want to turn him into one of them.
